World coin collecting / New Exact Change YouTube Channel
« on: June 04, 2018, 12:59:18 PM »
We’ve just set up a YouTube channel to stream Exact Change videos and we started it off with a fun little video about the cold war and it’s affect on coinage.   Please take a look and be sure to give it a thumbs up in order to help us really launch this new channel.

World coin collecting / Venezuelan Bolivar revaluation
« on: March 23, 2018, 09:31:04 PM »
Yesterday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announce that Venezuela will revalue the Bolivar at a rate of 1000 to 1, basically just chopping three zeros off any monetary figure.  The new notes, which should begin circulating on June 4th, are intended to address that country’s hyperinflation.  Had he consulted Exact Change, he’d have seen many instances where this has been attempted but led only to further inflation (for example, Turkey, Greece, Zimbabwe and, yes, Venezuela).  The current exchange rate for the Bolivar is .0020 cents.

Development and feedback / Price list and image updates available
« on: January 23, 2018, 09:33:49 AM »
If you haven’t already done so, be sure to download the latest price lists in order to get 2018 listings as well as new coin designs and new images.  We’re in the process of posting updates to the Exact Change image library; already there are a couple thousand new images including both new U.S. coins and coins from around the world.  There are also new additions to the database to cover war money, P.O.W. camp script from World War I and paper money of the Spanish Civil War.  We’d like to thank Timothy Hoyer who has been sending a consistent stream of emails with new images.  We’d also like to thank Darrell Brown who has sent us many DVDs filled with images he’s provided.  There are a lot of images still being processed, so more images will be posted over the coming days.

Paper money / Zimbabwe dollars
« on: November 25, 2017, 06:22:59 PM »
With Zimbabwe appearing in the news so much recently, it’s interesting to note the hyperinflation that destroyed that country’s monetary system.  The 1st dollar, in use from 1983 to 2006 was replaced in 2006 with the 2nd dollar, dropping 10 zeros off the value (10,000,000,000 1st dollars=1 2nd dollar).

Just two years later the 3rd dollar replaced the second dollar, again dropping 10 zeros off the value and a year after that the 4th dollar was introduced, dropping 12 zeros off the value.  Two months later (April 2009) the Zimbabwe dollar was abandoned altogether.  By that time, the 4th dollar was worth 2x1035 1st dollars (100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000)

Development and feedback / Civil War tokens
« on: November 05, 2017, 06:03:46 PM »
We’re looking at the possibility of creating a tool specifically for Civil War tokens, a tool which would enable you to match Fuld die numbers since Civil War tokens are described by their obverse and reverse die pairing.  This could be quite an undertaking though, so I’d like to hear from anyone who has any thoughts about this or who perhaps has any Civil War tokens of which they could supply images (this endeavor would require a lot of images).  If you collect Civil War tokens or have any experience in this area, we welcome your thoughts on the matter so that we can make this a truly helpful tool.

We’re also looking at ways to make a decoder for Chinese cash coins and would welcome input from anyone with knowledge of this subject.  The goal is to provide users with little or no experience in Chinese cash coins with the ability to designate the characters depicted on the coin and get a translation of their meaning.

The Pattern and Trial Coinage addition is a massive database on which we've been working for months now.  These are rare examples of rejected design concepts, experimental designs and compositions, and off metal strikes.  Even if your budget doesn't allow you to file away these rare or unique pieces, you'll certainly find the database to be a fascinating museum of what might have been.  To add pattern coinage to your collection, download the price list for this database.  Doing so will cause "Pattern Coinage" to appear as a new option under "North America" in the program's "Add Countries" menu.

The medals and tokens database adds bronze medals from the U.S. Mint (also known as "List Medals") as well as privately issued tokens such as the oil company tokens which were a popular collectable in the late 1960's and Crackerjacks price tokens from the 1930s.  This database differs from the "Private Issues" database, which focuses on money alternatives such as California Fractional gold pieces. Of course, a database of medals and tokens could go on without end, so we've focused on notable series of tokens and we anticipate that this database will continue to grow; if you have a token or medal that you think should be included in the database, please contact us. To add medals and tokens to your collection, download the price list for this database.  Doing so will cause "Medals and Tokens" to appear as a new option under "North America" in the program's "Add Countries" menu.

World coin collecting / Exact Change now includes the island of Anguilla
« on: October 20, 2017, 01:01:49 AM »
The smallest of the new database additions is the coinage from the island nation of Anguilla which briefly operated as an independent "Republic of Anguilla" and produced it's own coinage in between 1968 and 1970.   To add Anguilla to your collection, download the price list for this database.  Doing so will cause "Anguilla" to appear as a new option under "Central America" in the program's "Add Countries" menu.

World coin collecting / Exact Change now includes the island of Niue
« on: October 20, 2017, 01:01:03 AM »
The Island of Niue is a prolific issuer of new coinage designs from government and private mints around the world.  With a population of less that 1600, the number of distinct coin designs means that every Niuean could have a Niue coin in their possession without any two having the same design. This makes it very difficult to keep up with the coinage of Niue, but we've built an extensive representation of these coins.  Of course, if you happen to have a coin from Niue that we've not yet included, we'd really like to hear from you.  To add Niue to your collection, download the price list for this database.  Doing so will cause "Niue" to appear as a new option under "Oceania" in the program's "Add Countries" menu.

The Tubbs fire, which burned  36,432 acres is now 92% contained and this evening we got some much-needed rain.  A week ago we loaded the entire office in preparation for evacuation as the flames were visible from our doorway and the Sheriff issued an advisory evacuation.  We're once again set up and we'll be posting a series of database, price list and program updates over the next few days.

The Tubbs fire south of us has been moving north and flames are now visible from our office.  We are in the process of shutting down and loading equipment in case it becomes necessary to evacuate.  Because of this, our office will be closed today and may remain closed for some days if we do need to leave.  We’ll post more information here as we can.

Development and feedback / California wildfires
« on: October 10, 2017, 04:11:54 PM »
Due to the wildfires in our area, our internet access is temporarily limited and phone service has been somewhat intermittent.  We are in the office and available.  Our office, while quite smoky, is not in the path of the fire in Clearlake to our north or the fires in Calistoga and Santa Rosa to our south.  If we lose internet service, we will reply to any messages as soon as service is restored.

World coin collecting / Palau
« on: August 01, 2017, 12:58:25 PM »
Wild Man Software is pleased to announce a new addition to the world coin database; the small south pacific island nation of Palau.  If you download the price list for Palau (You’ll find it under Coins of Oceana) that will add Palau to the “Add countries” menu as well as the list of countries for which you can download images.
