Technical support / Re: is a 64-bit Mac version under consideration

Yes, we’ll have an announcement about it in the near future.  There are some really big projects in the works now (new databases and such) so we’re just looking to do an orderly rollout.

2018 is listed in the mint and proof sets; I just downloaded the price list and confirmed that.  So, I’m wondering if, when you’re downloading the price list and it pops up with the list of countries, do you have United States checked in the list?  It remembers your previous selections and defaults to that, so if it got unchecked along the way, that’d basically be turning of updates to that particular price list.

I'm here all day and will be here until around 3am; call any time at (707)987-4499.  We don't have a message about the program not being optimized so I would imagine that's actually a message from another program.

In the first image below, I’ve circled the “Value” column (though I don’t know if this is the same report you’re looking at)  Are you just not seeing values in that column or are you also not seeing values on the “Coins” page (the value circled in the second image)?  I’m not seeing an issue with the values field on the report but it won’t show a value if the coin doesn’t have a value on the “Coins” page.  For example, if a coin doesn’t have a grade assigned or if that coins price is based on melt value but the melt value has not been set (these are just a couple of examples) then the program would not have all the information it needs to assign a value.  I think it’d be easier to get to the bottom of this if we spoke via phone; I’m available at (707)987-4499 if you’d like to do that.

World coin collecting / Venezuelan Bolivar revaluation
« on: March 23, 2018, 09:31:04 PM »
Yesterday, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro announce that Venezuela will revalue the Bolivar at a rate of 1000 to 1, basically just chopping three zeros off any monetary figure.  The new notes, which should begin circulating on June 4th, are intended to address that country’s hyperinflation.  Had he consulted Exact Change, he’d have seen many instances where this has been attempted but led only to further inflation (for example, Turkey, Greece, Zimbabwe and, yes, Venezuela).  The current exchange rate for the Bolivar is .0020 cents.

When you say you’re trying to create a list, do you mean that you’re trying to create a custom report with the report editor, or just trying to print one of the reports?  Also, are you using High Sierra or an earlier version of the Mac OS?

The pricing page automatically sorts by Year, then Mint and then Variety.  This is done so that if you add a new column you don’t have to manually insert it in the correct order to move it yourself.  In some cases, though, that may not be exactly what you want.  We ran into the same thing in the Presidential Dollar series; we don’t want the 2007-D James Madison to come before the 2007-D Thomas Jefferson.  In that case, we wanted the presidents to be listed in the order they served.  So, we added their numerical order to the beginning of their name (i.e. “1: George Washington”).  If you can provide an example of three or four Year/Mint/Variety entries, I’m sure we could figure from that how best to address your question.

The new structure for the Seated Halves a while ago does cause a bit of a stir for this reason; we really should have subdivided it right from the start but nearly 20 years ago when we laid out that structure, we did not envision that the database would expand so much and grow to this level.

Anyway, the tracking function can be used to move these coins to the new subcategories.  To do this, mark as tracked all of the coins to be moved (place a check in the box labeled “Tracked” on the coins page).  If you sort the coin grid by date, all of the coins to be moved will be consecutive so you can select the whole range of coins and click the “Tracked” checkbox once to check them all (if you want to get fancy).  Once that’s done, just right-click (on the series editor) on the series that you want to move those coins to; in the menu that appears is an option labeled “Moved tracked coins here” and that will do what you want.

If that sounds complicated, I would be happy to walk you through it over the phone if you wish.  Our number is (707)987-4499

There are actually three types of updates you can download; program updates, price list updates and image updates.  Rather than lumping these all into one download option, we separated it so that you can have more control over what you want to download.  For example, some people who've made a lot their own of changes to a particular price list don't want to download our price list and have it overwrite theirs.  There are so many images that it can take a while to download them, especially if your internet connection isn't great.  Therefore, you may want to download a new version of the program without having to, at the same time, download gigabytes of image data.

Anyway, it sounds like you downloaded the program update but what you'll need to do to see the 2018 data is download the current price lists.  In the "Tools" menu, under "Check for updates", select "Download current price lists".  If you download images, you'll get the images of the 2018 coins.  All of the 2018 coins currently in the database (from any country) are imaged in the image library.

Yes, the update includes a copy of the Redir.ini file because some people haven’t yet got downloaded that file; one of the complications that arise because some people skip over a number of updates.  I’ll remove that file from future updates since missing that file has no negative impact unless you’re redirecting files.

Change the very first line of your Redir.ini file from [Directorys] to [Directories] and that’ll resolve the redirection issue.  I got called out for the spelling issue though I’m not entirely certain that “Directories” is right in this case.  Anyway, that change will make the file work.

You’ll find a draft copy of the revised 2x2 inserts in your email inbox; please let me know what you think of it and if there are any further revisions you’d like to make.

I’m looking at the PDF files you included, but there’s an important bit of information that I can’t seem to pick out of that because it shows the labels as printed rather than the sheet that you want to print on.  It’s not clear how many rows and columns your sheet has, nor how wide the borders are.  For example, I’m looking at a sheet that has 4 inserts wide and 5 inserts tall.  Each insert is 1-7/8 inches tall/wide so 4 inserts wide is 7.5 inches, leaving a quarter inch border on each side.  Since the sheet has 5 inserts vertically, for a total of 9.5 inches, there are ¾ inch borders along the top and bottom.  Does this accurately describe the sheet you want to print on?

I’m going to make a guess here that at some point in those two months you updated to High Sierra; if that’s the case then just send me an email at WildMan@ExactChange.Info and I’ll send you a link that’ll clear that right up.  Otherwise I’d need to know a little bit more about what happened when you try to open a collection file.

That insert is smaller than the report is designed for.  Yes, if you can send a scan of the sheet that would be very helpful.  If you could jot on it some measurements, that also could help.  Since the insert is smaller, we’ll need to remove something from it in order to get everything to fit, or we can just scale it down so that the print is proportionally smaller.  Let me know what you’d prefer; the report editor is extremely flexible so we can lay it out basically any way you can imagine it.

Are you using the Mac or Windows edition of Exact Change?  What model is your printer and what brand of 2x2s inserts are you using?  We call them 2x2 but there are actually several sizes (maybe that name should be changed to "Flip inserts" or something like that).  If you have a ruler handy, it would be helpful to confirm the size of the inserts and also to measure the width of the top, bottom and side boarders.  In there somewhere we’ll find a simple answer.
